GBCM Supports Romanian Charity
17th December, 2008
A number of the GBCM management team recently attended the annual Halloween Charity Ball in Bucharest in support of the charity Ovidiu Rom (which took place on Saturday, October 25 2008, at the People's Palace).
The goal of Ovidiu Rom (www.ovid.ro) is "to promote self-sufficiency among the poorest members of Romanian society through education, job training, community development, and public awareness." The organization began when Peace Corps Volunteer Leslie Hawke and Maria Gheorghiu obtained a US aid grant to start a program for fifteen impoverished mothers and an education program for children who begged on the street in 2001. In 2004, they founded the Asociatia Ovidiu Rom.
This year the theme for the charity ball was "Heroes", people who through vision, courage, hard work, talent, grace and creativity made history as role models and sources of inspiration. Funds were raised on the night through various auctions (Demi Moore's donated HIT bag sold for 7.000 Euros, and a necklace provided by Gwyneth Paltrow raised 13.000 Euros). From the approximately 410.000 Euros raised, 10% represent organizing expenses while the rest of the money will be allocated to next year's "Every Child in School" program. Presently, Ovidiu Rom (in its educational programs), supports 300 families, 400 teachers, school mediators and other specialists, and 500 children from financially challenged families.
Obviously being in the educational sector, Globe College values the mission of Ovidiu Rom and provides support in the form of attendance at the annual ball and also in raising funds for specific projects undertaken by the charity.
