Report on University of Ulster
Alumni Meeting
7th Feb, 2008
GBCM was
delighted to host the first meeting of the
University of Ulster
Bavarian alumni group on the 7th of February at the college premises
in Munich. Over 80 participants were present on the night which was
not only an excellent networking event but also great “Craic”.
More
details on the event are provided in the report below, which was
compiled by the University of Ulster representatives who attended the
event for the upcoming UU alumni magazine.
Bavaria 2008
In
February, a small delegation of University staff went to Munich to
help establish a Bavaria Branch of the Alumni Association.
Wayne
Robinson of the Alumni Relations Office, Peter Hough of Student
Marketing and Dr Frank Owens of the Faculty of Computing and
Engineering attended the evening event hosted by the Globe Business
College in Maximiliansplatz. The event was instigated and facilitated
by Dr Susan Walsh, herself an alumna, and a Dean of the College.
There are
over 250 alumni in Bavaria, due in part to our existing links with
educational establishments in Augsburg, Kempten and Gießen through the
Faculty of Computing and Engineering. Consequently many of the 80
attendees were engineers. However, there were also numbers of alumni
who had studied business or humanities. It was a particular pleasure
to welcome honorary graduates Professors Hans Benedikt and Alfred Eder
to the event.
The
alumni were welcomed by Dr Walsh. Wayne spoke on the benefits of a
Bavaria Alumni Branch and encouraged the graduates to become active
members of the Association. Peter introduced the idea of the student
journey and that the University continued to have a great deal to
offer alumni in the form of opportunity for further study and
professional development. Dr Owens rounded off the presentations by
speaking of the strong connections between the University and Bavaria.
There was
a great buzz around the stylish venue as friendships were
re-established and reminiscences were shared. The reluctance of people
to leave at the end of the evening demonstrated how much 'craic' was
being enjoyed.
Dr Owens
says “for me personally it was great to meet so many engineering
graduate and exchange students, spanning the 20 years that our
collaboration has been in existence. It was rewarding to hear how
their careers had developed and how their education at Ulster had
greatly helped them along the way.”
All in
all, a highly successful evening, managed faultlessly by the Globe
Business College. A vote of thanks is due to them, as well as the
event sponsors: Expattax; The Openminds Diversity Consultancy; Red Hot
Productions; Chambervelt Rooselain & Cie Ltd.; and Otto 11.
